1984-BLOG 2

What was going on in the world when Orwell wrote 1984?

Orwell's 1984 was published in 1948, just as World War II ended. This was also the time of the totalitarian government as Stalin ruled over Russia and Hitler ruled over Germany. Totalitarianism is to be under absolute rule or dictatorship of a leader. This book was written in 1948 writing about what would happen in the future, 1984, if totalitarianism was not opposed. Orwell portrays the state of Oceania in which the government monitors and controls every aspect of human lives. They were under the dictatorship of "Big Brother". Privacy was no where to be found and just about everything they did was against the law, even the smallest thing such as having disloyal thoughts.

1984 PLOT

So this is what I have so far.
The main character Winston Smith is a member of the Party that is ruling over the state of Oceania. The Party rules under the dictatorship of Big Brother. The party has strict rules laid down for each Party member, rules which prohibits free thought, sex, and any expression of individuality. Everywhere he goes, he is being watched by the Party through telescreens which are always left on. Telescreens are a way in which the Police could monitor the actions of the citizens so Winston keeps his back to the telescreen. He finds his illegally purchased diary in the drawer that is hidden from the telescreen and begins to write his criminal thoughts in it. Winston becomes suspicious on one powerful party member named O'Brien. He believes that O'Brien is a secret member of the mysterious, legendary group that works to overthrow the Party.
