1984- BLOG 3

1. What was the climax of the story? Some of you have already talked about this in class, but I want each group to come to a consensus.
I believe the climax of the story is in part two chapter 10 when Winston and Julia get caught. Winston rented the room above Mr. Charrington's antiques shop so he and Julia could have a place to meet. They knew this was risky and the chances of them being captured in Mr. Charrington’s place were high. Waking up one morning finding them surround in the house, Winston was separated from Julia. Winston realized that Mr. Charrington was a member of the Thought Police all along.

2. What was the social commentary?
George Orwell lived in the totalitarian era when Stalin was ruling. As he wrote this novel he was imagining how the future would be like if Stalin was still ruling and how the world would be like if it was still under totalitarianism. What Orwell pictured was a terrible life. Cameras or telescreens were everywhere watching everybody's single move, there was NO freedom at all. No one was able to think for themselves, they became "virtually inhuman". This life that Orwell describes sounds like a horrible life to live.

3. Why did you like/dislike the novel? Don't just say "I thought the story was good"... I want some opinion and thought, here! Also, I don't want you to write "it sucked" without backing up your opinion with some good, critical comments. Think of a movie review. Those reviewers never just say "it sucked"... they give evidence and details.
And... it's okay to dislike your book!
Over all, this book was okay, not extremely good but, not horrible either. The novel was kind of slow and boring in the beginning but I thought the diary parts were interesting. It was like a reading a real diary hearing about his detailed life. The rebellious Winston and Julia parts were also interesting leaving questions about who the Thought police could be, or if they were going to get caught or not. Other than that the book was alright, I don't think I would read this book if I had a choice.
